Next to be interviewed was Martin Brench our Spares Registrar.
Martin lives in the
Leicester area ands has a collection of some twenty scooters. Martin told us that
he first started scootering in the ‘50’s the hey day of British Scootering. His first
scooter was a Lambretta LD150. He said he chose it because it had a pillion seat
for the girl friend. We are sure it would have had to be the streamline looks and
colour to attract the girl friend. His favourite scooter though is the Triumph Tigress
250, which he says never, let him down whether it was skill rides at gymkanas, rallies,
endurance runs or touring.
We then asked how he came to learn of the Vintage Motor
Scooter Club and why he joined. Martin said that he saw an advert in the “Classic
Bike” proposing the formation of the club. He contacted John Law and joined because
he could see that such a club would bring together people with a common interest
and aim. Martin added that one thing which really appealed to him was that the club
was not selective – no matter what the make or model of the machine, all with an
interest in scooters are Welcome.
We can see from the increase in our membership the
growth of interest in odd scooters and not only Vespas and Lambrettas. Asked about
the future of scootering Martin said the appearance of so many manufacturers answering
the search of cheap, reliable transport which can get you from A to B without being
stuck in traffic, had led to a boom in sales, proof I think that the future is assured.
Finally we asked Martin why he became a committee member and that he has to say to
members, Martin said he has been a committee member from the start (15 years) because
he wanted to see the aims of the Club realised. Enjoy your club, give if your support
not only do I enjoy riding but despite what some members have written I find both
riding a good way to unwind and relax.
